Name: Katy
Other characters: Pruna and Shion
IN CHARACTER
Name: Ian Gallagher
Fandom: Shameless (US)
Canon point : End of season 3
Journal:

PB: Play-by. Cameron Monaghan
History: Here
Presentation: Despite being quite tall and well built Ian manages for the most part to present himself as unassuming and unthreatening. He tends to be in the background, hanging around doorways, or convenient pieces of furniture, never quite entering a room unless there is something there to draw him in (usually food).
Ian is pretty good at blending into his surroundings, at home he helps out, is good with his younger brothers and sister. He doesn't get into trouble at school; even if he isn't the most book smart person around. He is in Junior ROTC and wants to be a marine, but around people he doesn't respect he mouths off and can be almost sullen at times.
Ian seems very close to his family, it's sort of hard not to be when there are so many of them. He is most affectionate with his baby brother Liam and most open with Lip who he confides in and trusts completely. He contributes his paycheck to the families joint income and when he is home he spends time teasing Carl and Debbie. He helps Debbie learn to hold her breath underwater and lends Carl camp supplies (for convenience not killing). However he tends to hold himself back from them, he doesn't share his problems with anyone outside of Lip.
Around other people not family he is quite and tries to avoid them. Though he helps Lip with his SAT taking scam (and many other scams) he tends to stand in the back talking only to clear things up. He doesn't talk that much to the customers in the store and lets Mickey take care of all security issues. When he and Lip are put in a group home when the Gallagher children are taken into care he is obviously uncomfortable around so many people. He stays quiet and lets Lip do all the talking.
Motivations:
Ian can do feelings better then Mickey. However since most household cats are better at feelings than Mickey that's not saying much. Ian is a product of his family, and cares for them a lot even though he holds himself away from them and ends up not taking part in family things a lot. He loves his younger brothers and sisters; most of his scenes within the family unit are based around him helping them or teasing them.
There are six Gallagher children and Ian is the third eldest in a family that faces a new crisis every week, sometimes every day. As such he finds it easy to fade into the background, he obviously cares but when it comes to his own problems he tends to not share, and instead get wrapped up in them.
He is probably most distant from his sister Fiona, though he cares for her and thinks she does a wonderful job. When she is trying to claim custody of them all he argues with Lip and tells him she will do a great job and he will support her the whole way.
Frank, their father, is an alcoholic and a useless waste of space. Ian has no fatherly feeling towards him at all and any that he might have had out of any kind of childish duty faded when he learned Frank was not his real father, his mother having had an affair with one of his brothers. After tracking down his potential real father Ian tells Lip to leave it as he doesn't want to barge into anyone's life and likes the family he has already.
He doesn't want Frank anywhere near the house, or the younger kids and often joins with Lip to kick him out. He has the least tolerance for Frank taking their stuff and often puts himself in range of blows by confronting him.
With his mother Ian has a very different relationship. She left when he was young and comes back into their life twice during the series, both times managing to mess everyone up more than they already where. When she first returns Ian can't handle it and flees. He starts by treating her the same as he treats Frank but when she comes back the second time, and seems to be improved he starts to warm to her, she takes him clubbing and they bond. Ian seems to like the attention that spending time on his own with his mum brings.
In general though he is disillusioned by family; "Do we know any cool dads?" He asks Lip while they look for his real dad, and "You're lucky your mum's dead." He tells Mandy.
In general Ian wants to do the right thing, even if that 'right thing' is actually illegal. However he knows when there are fights he can't win and knows when to run when necessary. He shows recklessness; in going to confront the Milkovich's for example and barging into their house to take Kash's gun back from Mickey. He speaks up when Mickey is thieving even though Mickey would happily kill him, but runs from Karen's dad and Mickey's dad.
Ian wants to join the marines, he is in his schools ROTC and wants to train at Westpoint and become an officer. He isn't the most booksmart of people but after learning the grades he would need to get into Westpoint his brother Lip tutors him and he works hard at the subjects he struggles with. This means he does his best to not get caught in trouble, which doesn't stop him breaking the law (he happily agrees to break into someone's house for example); he just has to be smart about it. Lip; despite disagreeing with Ian's decision to enlist does his best to take the blame and let Ian escape from trouble.
He doesn't seem all that patriotic, and is quite close mouthed about his reasons for wanting to be an officer, but considering his home life, the pride he takes in ROTC and his attitude and comments about life and his attitude to relationships it wouldn't be far fetched to believe that what he wants is structure, something solid that wont leave, wont abandon him and will give back as much as he gives. He also makes comments during his fight with Lip about constantly living in his shadow, and that it is hard not to when he has to wear his hand me downs. ROTC and his dreams of being an officer is something he has for himself, none of his family are interested in the army and so it is something he can work for, and achieve without having to follow anyone else's established standards.
His dream is to be an officer but as everything falls apart at the end of the third series he runs, stealing his brothers identity and enlisting at seventeen, probably ruining all his life plans and his chances of ever realising that dream.
Despite avoiding attention at home and keeping himself distant from the family in terms of his own personal life he actively seeks it elsewhere. Through ROTC; where he has made Lieutenant and through his choice in relationships
Ian figured out quite early he was gay and is fine with it. He's not publicly out because he's not stupid and in his neighbourhood he might as well walk around with a sign asking for a beating. By the end of series three all the adults of his family are aware of this fact and none of them have a problem with it.
In series one he is having an affair with his older, married employer Kash. Lip calls Ian on this when he finds out, digging at Ian about the fact Kash buys him stuff. Ian retorts angrily that he buys Kash things in return. He doesn't seem to mind about the fact Kash is married; though he freaks out the one time he goes to Kash's house. When Kash leaves Ian is disgusted he would leave his family like that.
He later has a relationship with his elder sister's boyfriend's dad (he doesn't know of this connection at the time), when Mickey asks him why he tells him "he buys me stuff, and orders me room service" though then adds, "He's not afraid to kiss me." Though Ian knows and understands why he has to hide he doesn't see any reason to hide in private.
Which brings us to Mickey. Mickey and Ian began by hating each others guts and somehow ended up having sex. Mickey as mentioned earlier in this app cannot do feelings at all. For the most part Ian understands this and can speak 'Mickey' quite well. He understands that "shut the fuck up" means "I miss you too." and threatening to cut his tongue out is practically romantic.
Unlike his other partners Ian loves Mickey, he is totally smitten with him despite the fact Mickey pretends he doesn't care for quite a while. Ian isn't stupid, and he isn't naive. He knows that happy endings don't happen, and he has the total of one positive relationship as an example. However despite the fact he's terrified of Mickey's dad, understands why Mickey is terrified of Mickey's dad he still wants Mickey to call off his wedding and defy Terry.
He gets angry at Mickey's silence, Mickey's refusal to talk about what happened, he is angry at the world that they have to hide and that Mickey is hiding from even himself. He is so angry, and so upset that he decides to leave, unable to see Mickey and his new wife. It is notable that though most of the guys he's had sex with before were married he can't cope with the idea of Mickey being married, especially since he knows it was forced.
Outside of relationships and family Ian really only has one friend and that is Mandy; Mickey's brother and his fake girlfriend. He will do anything for her, and is protective of her whilst fully accepting the fact she could probably kill him.
Ian is for a large part afraid of his own strength and anger. He rarely fights people; even rarer does he fight back if someone is hitting him, not even when Fiona mock hits him when he is released from the police station. In an early scene Lip asks why he doesn't hit Frank back and Ian tells him because he'd kill him. When he does lose his temper he is vicious and he can fight well, he takes Mickey out at one point in one blow.

Thread: Here we goes
Prose: This wasn't the army. He had read everything he could possibly find about basic training, questioned anyone who would answer and this, cold metal tables and cryptic answers about death matches were not part of it.
Apparently these were the people he had to impress, to have a chance of living. He looked around. "Where the fuck am I?" He asked, and was met with silence. No one so far has answered that question.
He stood glaring at them for the moment, clenching his fists before he made up his mind. If impressing them would mean they let him leave this room then they would be impressed. He looked at the pile of weapons, impressed despite himself and weighed up what he had to work with.
There were no guns, which was annoying, but understandable for a bunch of people involved in kidnapping fighters but there were knives so he picked one up and demonstrated a few holds, attacking the practice dummy brutally it at least took the edge of his anger.
He did a few Kata as well, since he had no idea what they were actually looking for and then some push ups.
Now that the shock of being thrown in here had worn off this all seemed strange, familiar even, though he had never been kidnapped before. The testers were still silent so he went over to the knot tying table and demonstrated a few of the more complicated knots he knew. "That enough for you?"
What is your character scored: 8
Ian is in ROTC, he is a pretty much perfect shot and can use a knife. He is trained in Karate as well as Army based hand to hand fighting. He tells Lip at one point that he can do a hundred push ups at a time and run a six minute mile, so he has high levels of stamina. Unlike his siblings his time in ROTC means he has spent time outside of the city, he has had wilderness training, he can read a map, find his way around. Though he is only a seventeen year old human he is strong and trained. He has no qualms about the idea of killing (though he has never killed anyone), he has seen people shot and can stay calm enough to help them. He has a pretty high tolerance for pain.
Additional information:
This is a question more than anything. The Hunger Games is something that is mentioned in Shameless. The Gallagher household has a copy (Frank reads it to the younger kids in the episode where he is sober), it's a book that they read together and Frank is only sober for like three days and so Ian has likely read parts of it to them/read it himself/heard Debbie ramble about it. Frank knows enough about it to mention Katniss in a rant and Ian pays a million times more attention to his siblings than Frank. So my question is: is this okay? Or shall there be some kind of memory wipe when it comes to that?
